Red Gold invites you to join in the 5th Annual Run to Crush Hunger that supports wellness and good nutrition while giving back to local Indiana food banks in need. For the fifth year in a row, the Run to Crush Hunger unites local communities to promote healthy and active lifestyles, while fighting hunger in Central Indiana in addition to Red Gold’s national effort to Crush Hunger.
ELWOOD, Ind. (October 1, 2016)
New this year are multiple race routes that start and finish in downtown Elwood just in time for the 31st Annual Chili Cook-Off, Colt’s Blue Saturday, Indiana Craft Beer and Wine Garden and more! “There is something for everyone,” says Tim Ingle, VP of Human Resources at Red Gold, who encourages families to bring and register the region’s youth, friends, and neighbors regardless of their appetite to walk, run, watch or simply have a bowl of chili on a beautiful autumn day. The 10k, 5k and 1-mile family walk is expecting to draw a crowd of over 1000 race participants from 80 different cities and eight states. All of the proceeds from the race will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank, the Morrisett Center Food Pantry, and Habitat for Humanity of Madison County.
The new race routes show off some of Elwood’s most historical landmarks, homes, parks, and even goes right by the Red Gold Corporate Headquarters on Tomato Country Way. The race will start at the St. Joseph Center and ends downtown at the Chili Cook-Off. “We have grown this race each year, and have already hit record sponsorship numbers and race registrations,” said Kelsi Fullenkamp, Human Rescores Assistant and Race Director for Red Gold. “We are hopeful that everyone is encouraged to join this fun race, while more children see the benefit of being physically active while having fun too,” says Fullenkamp. Elwood Community School Corporation Superintendent, Chris Daughtry, has challenged the school’s football team and cheerleaders to walk in the event, and has invited other High School’s to join the fun. “We hope that younger students will be inspired when they see the area football players and cheerleaders leading the way in being active both at school and afterwards,” says Daughtry. ‘Crush Hunger Saturday’, is a family friendly day of fun which includes the 5th Annual Run to Crush Hunger at 9 am, Annual Red Gold Chili Cook-Off, Colts Blue Saturday, Indiana Craft Beer and Wine Garden, vendor booths and great entertainment immediately following. Past race participants are amazed at the transformation of Elwood in northern Madison County, the amount of community support, and how well the day’s events are organized. “The tremendous growth of participants, sponsors, volunteers, community, school and civic involvement is the recipe for success that has already made this a premiere tradition in northern Madison County”, says Todd Jones, Elwood Mayor.
The second Saturday of every October will continue to be the date for this fun-filled family weekend.
